DOUG TIMMERMAN

Mediator

Doug has been an attorney since passing the Illinois bar exam after graduating from law school in 1991.  He practiced law in Illinois for ten years then moved from Urbana, Illinois to Parker, Colorado, with his family, and became licensed and practiced law in Colorado from January 2002 until relocating back to Central Illinois, and now resides in Bloomington, Illinois.

After a few years on the front range in Colorado, Doug relocated to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, in 2006. Prior to moving to Steamboat,  Doug was an Assistant Regulation Counsel with the Colorado Supreme Court, then re-entered private practice, focusing on litigation, in the areas of Family Law, Criminal Law and Personal Injury.  In approximately 2009, he began his mediation practice in Northwest Colorado, in the areas of his litigation experience, especially in Family Law, due to a lack of mediators in the area.

He has extensive trial experience and has secured numerous favorable verdicts, including winning nearly 90% of his criminal jury trials while practicing in the 14th Judicial District in Colorado.  He briefly worked for a Denver firm, with a Steamboat Springs office, in 2015 and 2016, and then had a solo practice, Timmerman Law Office, for four years before joining Jay Melnick to form Melnick and Timmerman LLC. Doug took the live in person 40 hour mediation course through the Colorado Bar Association in the Summer of 2023, to begin preparation for solely focusing on mediation services.

In December of 2023, Doug relocated back to Central Illinois, with his wife, Sharon to be closer to their oldest and youngest adult children, Elizabeth and Max, and their families.

In the Spring of 2024, Doug decided to cease private practice and is now solely devoted to Mediation in the areas of law with which he is familiar. Doug’s mediation practice emphasizes family law and general civil law, including personal injury and general civil litigation, including the areas of employment, transactions and contract disputes.

Doug grew up in Minnesota and was an enlisted officer in the Air Force before attending law school.  He practiced law in Illinois from 1991 to 2001, before relocating with his wife Sharon and their sons, Quentin and Max, to Colorado where they were raised. Quentin remains in Colorado, while Max is now living in Bloomington, Illinois, a few miles from Doug and his wife.

Prior to law school, he graduated from Illinois State University in 1988, with a BS in political science and a minor in philosophy.  In 1991, Doug received his law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law.  Before finishing his undergraduate degree and then attending law school, he was a Medical Laboratory Technician in the U.S. Air Force and then in private hospitals in Champaign and Bloomington, Illinois, while in college.  Doug enjoys the practice of law and, in particular, his mediation practice. He takes great satisfaction in assisting parties with navigating the anxieties associated with the legal system, and resolving disputes with creative solutions.  Doug believes personal relationships are the key to assisting his clients and gives priority to his clients needs and concerns.

Doug is admitted to practice law in the State of Colorado and the United States District Court, District of Colorado, as well as previously being licensed in Illinois and is admitted in Federal Court in both the Northern District and Central District of Illinois.  He remains a member of the Colorado Bar Association.
